Bulletin board system
Before the web, before social media, before the cloud: people built their own networks—one modem, one phone line, one bulletin board at a time.
A BBS was a computer server running software enabling terminal-based user connection. Users uploaded and downloaded software and data, read news and bulletins, and exchanged messages via public message boards or direct chatting. FidoNet provided NetMail, a service similar to internet-based email. Many BBSes offered online games for user competition. BBSes with multiple phone lines provided chat rooms for user interaction. BBSes were a precursor to the World Wide Web, social networks, and other aspects of the Internet. Low-cost, high-performance asynchronous modems drove BBS use through the early 1990s. In 1994, there were 60,000 BBSes serving 17 million users in the United States alone.
A BBS was not a website. It was a single-server, terminal-accessed node run by an individual or small group.

Where it came from
It emerged from hobbyist computing culture in the late 1970s and early 1980s, enabled by low-cost, high-performance asynchronous modems.
What it gets right
It gave users direct control over content, connection and code. Uploads, downloads, message boards, NetMail, chat rooms and games all ran on systems users often built, maintained and moderated themselves.
What it gets wrong
It assumed scarcity—of phone lines, modems, time, bandwidth—and baked in gatekeeping, exclusion and fragmentation. FidoNet bridged some BBSes, but no universal directory or protocol unified them.
